The Seventh District comprises a considerable part of the nation’s manufacturing base — especially capital goods and consumer durables — as well as production agriculture and food processing.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Internship Program is a paid summer internship that provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at the Federal Reserve Bank. Through project-oriented hands on assignments and professional development activities, interns receive a solid overview of the business of the Fed while contributing to their designated Bank department.

The FRBC Internship Program begins in June and continues for 12 consecutive weeks. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week and are assigned to one department for the summer.

Business Unit Description:

The Community Development and Policy Studies (CDPS) division is part of the Economic Research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. CDPS works to improve the socioeconomic prospects of low- and moderate-income (LMI) people in part by working with community leaders to bring development and reinvestment opportunities to underserved communities. CDPS recognizes and works to address many challenges in the community development field. Current priority areas include affordable housing policy, access to credit for small businesses, rural development, and funding for community and economic development in lower-income communities in a limited-resource environment. CDPS has adopted the tagline ‘research, convene, connect’ to express our core functions succinctly. We research and conduct outreach to gain insight on key issues hindering access to credit and economic opportunity; convene diverse community development and policy stakeholders to share information and coordinate solutions; and connect financial institutions and other intermediaries with places in need to foster effective interventions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the economists and state directors in their outreach and research by collecting data, conducting moderately complex statistical analysis, and organizing the presentation of results

  • Assist the economists and state directors in the analysis of public policy issues and events related to mission and mandate of the department.

  • Prepare a variety of charts, tables, and descriptive text for Department management or other staff economists to use in their briefings and presentations .

  • Perform other duties as requested.

Job Requirements:

  • Pursuing a graduate degree in public policy, business, economics or other related field ideally with an emphasis (demonstrated by coursework or previous work experience) on community and economic development

  • Strong analytical skills complemented by strong writing/communication/presentation skills

  • Proficiency in one of all of the following: STATA, SAS, or SPSS. Experience with ArcGIS and/or Javascript is a plus.
