Purpose

External Relations works to obtain and strengthen broad social acceptance before, during, and beyond the life of a mine. The Social Responsibility sub-function supports the work with neighboring communities at each of Newmont’s sites while the External Relations sub-function builds relationships with global, national, and regional stakeholders.

Essential Duties

Scope and Responsibilities:

The internship will ideally be from January 2018 – June 2018. The exact dates are flexible depending on the student’s availability. It is assumed that the internship will be part time (16-20 hours/week) during this time. Interns will receive a stipend. The work will be designed to execute with little supervision at the Denver Tech Center corporate office, and may include travel to one or more of Newmont’s sites. There is ample opportunity for internal networking.

The intern will be responsible for supporting Newmont’s internal and external sustainability reporting initiatives, which include the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) assessment, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) questionnaires for Carbon and Water, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for Sustainability Reporting Framework for Sustainability Reporting, evaluating and responding to investor, ratings agency and watch group questionnaires about Newmont’s approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR), UN Sustainable Development Goals, and performing research on emerging sustainability reporting trends, initiatives and practices that include socially responsible investing, natural capital and non-financial impact valuation. The exact projects will be determined according to the intern’s availability, interest, skills, and experience.

Possible projects include:

  • Research into multiple topics including: Compiling and reporting investor rankings of Newmont’s sustainability performance; benchmarking industry and best practice sustainability reporting; reviewing and consolidating common approaches to reporting intangible value; researching “evergreen” sustainability reporting approaches, XBRL and other reporting tools and technologies; and performing other sustainability reporting related research

  • Reviewing CDP scoring methodology and develop predictive scoring tool for 2018 CDP Climate and Water 2018 responses based on CDP guidance documents

  • Performing gap analysis of current Beyond the Mine reporting to support the transition from GRI G4 reporting framework to the GRI Standards reporting framework in 2018

  • Supporting the sustainability reporting function for data analyses and report specifications and testing

  • Supporting broader engagement in the internal Sustainability & External Relations intranet (Prospector)

  • Consolidating internal and external stakeholder opinions to identify and rank the most important (material) sustainability topics in support of the corporation’s broader materiality assessment work

  • Supporting sustainability reporting initiatives, including the annual Beyond the Mine sustainability report and external assurance; DJSI and CDP reporting, internal quarterly reporting of progress-to-goals for water, carbon, and other key sustainability areas.

Training & Experience

  • Graduate students preferred, graduating in December 2018 or later. Graduate degree programs for “Green” MBAs, Sustainability Management, Environmental Leadership, Environmental Management, Interdisciplinary Environmental and/or Sustainability Studies, and related disciplines will be considered.

  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent

  • Experience in corporate social responsibility, sustainability, mining, and/or a passion for these disciplines

  • Organized and efficient time manager and ability to work unsupervised

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with a high comfort level with speaking to global internal stakeholders

  • Women and diverse students strongly encouraged to apply
